WHO WE ARE

History

The Brazilian Association for the Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Offences  - ABTOS, with headquarters located at the  Faculty of  Medicine – University of São Paulo (FMUSP), is a centre managed  by  members of the civil society , who together  join forces to fight against sexual violence.  The association focus on the prevention, assistance, discussion and research in the area of sexual offences, so as to fulfil the needs of the community.

The institution was born out of the need to offer the Brazilian communities a place where aspects of human relations, which are usually neglected because they are seen as taboo, can be discussed and divulged.  Professor Dr. José Raimundo Lippi , created the term Sexual Offences, which did not exist in Brazil, up to the time ABTOS was implemented.  When the non-profit making organization was created, Prof. Dr. Lippi was the only Brazilian member of Iatso - International Association for the Treatment of Sexual Offenders.

Together with Professor Dr. Cláudio Cohen, founder of Cearas – Centre for the Study and Assistance to Victims of  Sexual Abuse, a branch of the Institute Oscar Freire – Department of Forensic Medicine,  Medical Ethics,  Social and Work Medicine / FMUSP -, Prof. Dr. Lippi officialized the foundation of  ABTOS.
